Founding Board 

Dedicated volunteer directors leading the
realization of our S.E.N.I.O.R.S. Principles

Villa Cathay Care Home Society was incorporated under the BC Society Act as a non-profit organization in 1975. A group of dedicated volunteers, comprising of Chinese professionals and entrepreneurs, formed the Society and acted as the founding board that led the development of the Villa Cathay Care Home to provide residential care to serve the community.

Today the Villa Cathay Care Home Society Board comprises of nine Directors who govern the Villa Cathay Care Home and set the vision and direction for the Villa Cathay to advance our mission and align our values with our practices.

Dr. Harry Fan, LL.B, J.D., Founding Chair, Director Emeritus
Dr. Fan, a founding member of the Villa Cathay Care Home Society, has been our dedicated Board Chair since the incorporation of the Society in 1973. He is the first Chinese to graduate from a Canadian law school, and acquired his J.D. from University of British Columbia. He is a retired attorney who started practicing law in Vancouver, BC in 1958. Dr. Fan has served on several community association boards, including the Chinatown Merchants and Property Owner's Association, the Christ Church of China in Vancouver, the World Lotus Light Charity Society, and the Chinese Benevolent Association of Canada, the Chinese Cultural Centre in Vancouver, and many other social, educational and religious associations.

Dr. S. H. Hsu, M.D., F.R.C.P., Director Emeritus
Dr. Hsu is a retired anaesthetist, who practised in the Greater Vancouver area for some 25 years. As a long serving Board member at Villa Cathay, he continues to be an advocate for high quality, affordable care for seniors. He established the Hsu & Hsieh Foundation, which provides annual grants to support various charitable agencies and non-profit institutions in the province.

 

Current Board Members:

Ms. Lisa Donovan, B. Com., B.Ed., M.Ed., Chair
Ms. Donovan, a graduate of UBC and SFU, is a Faculty Associate teaching a Graduate Diploma Program to practitioners at Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Education. Her 20+ years in education also includes teaching High School in Richmond, BC and mentoring teachers for SFU. With aging parents she understands the needs of the elderly, and values the patience and quality care that the Villa Cathay can offer.

Mr. Andrew Cheung, M.Sc., C.A., Treasurer
Mr. Cheung received his Master degree from the University of British Columbia and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia. He has been in public accounting practice for over three decades.

Mr. Anthony Fan, B.A., Secretary
Mr. Fan has been a Commercial Realtor and Developer for 35 years, specializing in Commercial Property Sales, Leasing, Land Development, and Management. As well, he has operated a publishing company, restaurants, and a construction firm. His involvement in the Villa Cathay Care Home Society dates back to March of 1990 when he was elected to the Board of Directors. Since then, he remains a dedicated board member who cares for the welfare and benefits of seniors.

Dr. Peter Yu, B. Comm., D. Hum., Director
Dr. Yu is a Bachelor of Commerce graduate of the Canton College of Hong Kong and has a Doctorate Degree of Humanities from Andrew University in California, USA. Peter immigrated to Canada in 1967. By 1989 he started his entrepreneurial career opening his own reprographic business (Pioneer Printing), managing one of the most reputable reprographic businesses in BC. He has served some of the largest law firms in downtown, not to mention GVRD (Water & Sewerage Department), SNC Lavalin, mining companies and some of the most important shipping companies in the greater Vancouver area and Victoria. Peter has been in business for over 45 years. He is also one of the founders of the Vancouver Mandarin Church and President of the Vancouver Shanghai Friendship Association.

Dr. Joyce Ling, B.Sc., DMD, FPFA, FICD, Director
Dr. Ling is a graduate of University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry where she is currently a part time clinical associate professor. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from UBC prior to her dental training. She serves on the National Dental Examination Board as examiner. She is also a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists and is involved in promoting education and organized dentistry for over 20 years. She joined the Board of Director at Villa Cathay in 2004. She recognizes the ever-growing need of having a caring facility with superior comprehensive nursing care in the Chinatown area for Chinese-Canadian seniors in the community. Joyce lives and practises with her husband in Vancouver. They have one son who practises dentistry in Ottawa.

Dr. Robert Loh, D.D.S., Director
Dr. Loh is a general dentist, educated at New York University but practicing in Vancouver since graduating in 1985. He was on staff at VGH for nine years before moving to his private office in 1995. He has four grown children, one of them, his oldest daughter, has followed in her father's footsteps. Robert lived in Taiwan and Hong Kong when he was young. It was for his future as well as his brothers' that his parents moved to Vancouver in 1973. His parents gave up everything to move here. A few years ago when his mother needed a temporary care facility after hip surgery, Robert chose Villa Cathay for the recovery period. He wanted her to get the best care possible. He was not disappointed. It was during his mother's stay that Robert was asked to join the Villa Cathay Directors. He did not hesitate.

Dr. David Hsu, B.Sc., M.Sc., M.D., Director
Dr. Hsu is a graduate of UBC and has practised as a family physician, and with the BC Ministry of Health in the areas of health policy and planning. Currently, he works as a palliative physician at Vancouver General Hospital, involved in teaching medical students and residents, research in end-of-life issues, as well as providing consultation to help care for palliative patients. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the UBC Faculty of Medicine.

Board Committees:


The Fundraising Committee

This committee is currently embarking on a capital fundraising campaign for the Villa Cathay Rejuvenation Project to modernize the Care Home and increase its capacity by over 40 much needed beds to serve some of the most vulnerable seniors who require care.

The Development Committee

This committee is currently working with the management and Rejuvenation Project team to redevelop Villa Cathay to help fill the growing need for additional space to provide service and quality care for the community. This committee provides oversight on the project and ensures that the quality of life and standards of care are supported in the redeveloped facility.
