Rejuvenation Project

With the increase in demand for senior residential care, Villa Cathay has embarked on an exciting endeavour, the Villa Cathay Rejuvenation Project. After much planning with different levels of government, we are now proud to announce that we have secured the approvals needed to begin the rebuilding and rejuvenation of our care home.

Our Mission

We strive to create a home-like environment where elderly residents can find comfort, respect and dignity, and where quality individualized professional care is provided.

Why a New Home?

The Rejuvenation Project will modernize and expand our aging facility, provide an improved living and care environment for our seniors, and address current space constraints. Lack of freedom to safely maneuver wheelchairs, ineffective access to private bathrooms, a lack of privacy in hospital-like wards, plus outdated equipment and surroundings are just a few of Villa Cathay's daily challenges. Seniors currently represent more than 13% of Vancouver’s population and is expected to grow to 21% by 2031, making residential care beds a high priority.

Features of Our New Home

Upon completion, our rejuvenated home will provide up to 224 beds, an almost 50% increase. This will increase our ability to admit more seniors needing supervised quality care in a secure environment.

Our new home is being built in 2 stages to avoid the need to displace our residents to other temporary facilities in an unfamiliar environment.

  • 224 private rooms with a private washroom including 8 rooms that can be connected in order to accommodate couples

  • Shower available in each ensuite washroom removing the need to use shared bathing facilities and increase independence and dignity

  • Ceiling lift-ready rooms for seniors who are mobility challenged reducing the risk of injury to seniors and our staff

  • A dedicated therapy room to enhance rehabilitation potential and maintain independence through therapeutic exercise

  • An onsite dental room and hair salon to maintain health and personal style without having to arrange for stressful travel out to appointments by HandiDart

  • “Villas”, the care neighbourhood, that include a lounge, dining room, kitchen, exercise area, and a retreat room for residents and family members to share quality time together and minimize the residents’ isolation and loneliness

  • Access to a safe outdoor space in each Villa promoting mental wellness through access to the outdoors

  • A laundry facility in each Villa for seniors with the ability to further promote independence

How You Can Play a Part

The Rejuvenation Project is scheduled for completion in late 2020. However, in order to successfully expand and modernize Villa Cathay, we need your support in our fundraising campaign to raise $5 million. By becoming a supporter of our project, you will join our community that acknowledges the importance of much-needed affordable senior care. You will be sharing the vision of providing quality, culturally-focused care in a dignified, respectful and comfortable environment for our Chinese-Canadian seniors. Please take this opportunity to make a difference in their lives.

Your support is vital in bringing this project to fruition. We thank you for your generosity. There are many opportunities to recognize your family or a loved one within the rejuvenated Villa Cathay facility.

"Just like choosing a preschool for our toddlers, we have the same heart wrenching decision when it comes to choosing a care home for our parents/grandparents. We would love to care for them forever but that is often impossible. Where can we send them where they will be safe, treated respectfully and provided with comfortable and dignified care? In my case, Villa Cathay met my needs!"

"The decision to take a parent out of their own home and place her in a long term care facility is one of the most difficult a child can make, fraught with conflict and guilt. This struggle, I experienced personally, when my mother suffering from progressive dementia due to Alzheimer's disease needed more complex care. As a health care professional, I understand how important it is for my aging mother to be in a safe environment where she can continue to live comfortably in familiar surroundings. There was never a doubt in my mind that Villa Cathay would be the ideal setting for her. With intimate knowledge of how caring the staff team is, always advocating for the vulnerable seniors, while keeping family members informed. This is truly a home and everyone under this roof is treated just like family.”
