The Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden will pay tribute to Joe Wai for this year’s Asian Heritage Month by raising funds for Villa Cathay’s Rejuvenation Project and its COVID-19 recovery efforts.
The Villa Cathay Rejuvenation Project is the fruition of the late Joe Wai – a talented architect, a visionary community builder, and a trusted friend of the Vancouver community.
Joe started the blueprint of the Villa Cathay Rejuvenation Project way back in 2008. He spearheaded the whole process from ground zero, starting with successfully leading two of Villa Cathay’s rezoning applications to thoughtfully designing each element of the new Villa Cathay Care Home. Paying homage to the rich cultural heritage of Villa Cathay’s residents, Joe also incorporated distinct Chinese cultural elements throughout the design of the care home.
Sadly, Joe passed away unexpectedly six months before the construction of the project officially began. The Villa Cathay Rejuvenation Project became Joe’s final project, one that he was not able to see to completion.
Phase 1 of the Rejuvenation Project was completed in late 2019, and construction of Phase 2 is about to commence. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021, providing a total of 224 long-term care beds for the community.
Villa Cathay is forever indebted to Joe’s leadership and support towards our Rejuvenation Project. We invite you to join the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden in fulfilling Joe’s legacy to bring a reimagined long-term care home to our community.
